in a nutshell

I had a roomate who has immigrated in USA.

So, I had a time to speak English because I wanted to communicate with her in English.

She used this idiom when I didn't understand what she said.

After our communication, I found this idiom's meaning by using Internet.

Finally, I know when I want to say or explain briefly, I can use this idiom.

I also find the meaning of the idiom in dictionary. The meaing is a summary about something, right? Thank you for the new useful idiom.

Right... "In a nutshell" means "to summarize" or "basically".

Can I use the idiom in front of a conclusion paragraph, when I write a paper? :)
